The time that these updates occur varies from client to client to ensure that the traffic generated by many concurrent client connections, all attempting to download the OAB, does not swamp the Exchange server. In this situation, Outlook checks for updates daily (you cannot change the frequency of this check). When you use Outlook 20 in cached Exchange mode, Outlook automatically checks for OAB updates daily, but only when you have a fast network connection. The accuracy and usefulness of the OAB degrades rapidly as it ages past a month. Most companies have a reasonable churn within the directory as user details are updated, new users are added, and others are removed, so whereas a week-old OAB is usually OK because the vast majority of its entries are correct, a month-old OAB is much less satisfactory. When you deploy Outlook in cached Exchange mode, the OAB provides the necessary access to directory information to make cached Exchange mode work, but the directory information is only useful if it is kept updated.
